Imigrantes fora da lei
![]() |
A person is not happy in the country where they were born. There is a lack of work or, when there is work, there is a lack of salary at the end of the month. The streets are the stage for violent gangs. The police do not guarantee the safety of the citizens. There is no peace even at home. A stray bullet ends up hitting the body of a child, a wife, a worker, or an elderly person. In Rio, the hills have become dozens of new Palmares, where the forces of law do not enter, and when they do, they are met with gunfire. In a country like this, full of unrest and anxiety, the way out is through the airport. People emigrate. They flee the violent country, the meager salaries, and the lack of a future, towards the Eldorado (America, Europe).
The problem is that no one wants us there anymore. They don’t like us. As long as we are here, consuming the products they make, everything is fine. But when we want to live near them, learn the language, and adapt to the local customs, that’s when it doesn’t work. They handcuff us and expel us. We are shackled, like the runaway slaves of the 19th century; placed on military planes and thrown back where we should never have left.
During the Military Dictatorship, I couldn’t stand living in Brazil anymore. I had just gotten married and left for Europe with a one-way ticket (don’t do that; it’s the biggest mistake). I wanted to learn English, so I enrolled in a course for foreigners. After a month, I had found a job in a hotel as a "general help" (doing everything), rented an apartment, and in the afternoon, I attended the school, which had lectures and activities in the evening as well.
In Brighton, life was peaceful. I will never forget the cultural shock when I saw the milk bottles on the doorsteps of the shops. It was early in the morning. The city was shrouded in that typical mist, and the bottles of milk, untouched, awaited the merchants’ arrival. "Doesn’t anyone steal them?" I asked in astonishment to a teacher. He said, "No. No one steals."
While in Brazil, I was always afraid. I was constantly stopped by the police. They would search my pockets. Ask where I was going. Look at my wallet. In São Paulo, there was always the sense that something bad would happen to me. In Brighton, it was the sea of tranquility. I walked anonymously in the streets. No one ever asked for my documents or stopped me to question me.
There was a group of small Nazis, the skinheads, who already at that time hated immigrants and wanted to return England to the English. They were teenagers. They wore Dr. Martens boots, jeans, white t-shirts, and military jackets, almost always with the English flag sewn on the back. The skinheads liked to fight with the punks and "mods" (who still lived in the rock 'n' roll era, with their scooters and sideburns). They would leave London and come to the peaceful beaches of Brighton to fight.
There was this paradox: in São Paulo, I worked as a press officer for a motorcycle factory. I covered motorcycle races in several capitals of the country. I lived in a comfortable apartment in Aclimação. I had just finished two university degrees. I attended the cultural life of the city, going to theaters, cinemas, and book launches. Our life was relatively stable. Even so, there was a prevailing sense of unease. It’s a tropical, sunny country, but I still felt that gray, threatening cloud hanging over me. I wasn’t happy.
In Brighton, as a "general help," going with my wife to have Brown Ale beer at the pub on Fridays; occasionally going to the cinema (because it was very expensive for us), still, despite the tight money, the feeling was one of victory. I was happier in England, working as a handyman, than working in my field in Brazil.
This is the paradox that drives the emigrant. He may be employed, have a stabilized life, but he seeks something more, he seeks adventure. That’s why he sells everything he has in his country and embarks towards the dream. There are, of course, immigrants who have nothing, just the willpower, and want to rebuild their life abroad.
The problem is that, if it was already difficult to live in Europe in the 1980s, imagine now. There are thousands of immigrants from Bangladesh, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Maghreb Africans, who arrive on the shores of Italy in precarious boats, usually leaving from Libya. In North America, crossing Mexico to reach the United States, there are also thousands of Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans, Hondurans, Mexicans, and Brazilians (of course).
When I lived in Brighton, with legalized residence, there were many Portuguese living illegally in England. They worked as laborers in restaurants and construction, and every so often, the police would catch one of them and expel them from the country. I remember a Portuguese friend of ours who disappeared suddenly, and later we learned she had been deported. The immigrant always carries that feeling of uncertainty, of unease. He finds work, adapts to the country, makes new friends, but always carries with him the fear of falling into the hands of immigration agents. In New York, Latinos called these officers "immigra."
Today, Europe and the United States don’t want immigrants anymore. Every day, the news talks about boats that have sunk, killing people who were trying to reach European soil. In the U.S., the right-wing president takes advantage of the reactionary tide and invests against immigrants, just like the Europeans of the past, who, during the Black Plague, persecuted Jews, Gypsies, lepers, and beggars, believing that these marginalized groups were transmitters of the disease.
If I had a relative living illegally in the United States, I would advise them to return to Brazil. Forget the American dream. No matter how bad the situation is in their country of origin, it’s not worth staying in a country where people don’t like us. They don’t want us there. So, we can also return that disdain in the same measure. We can do like the Canadians have done. Stop consuming American products. It would be smart for Brazilian manufacturers to start putting Brazilian flags on their products. We no longer want to consume goods from those who don’t like us. We were their allies in World War II. We sent soldiers to fight alongside them against Nazism and Fascism. And now, in the face of this new political scenario, the moment for a break has come. Let’s look for new horizons, as Ana Carolina says.

Sobre a homofobia
![]() |
A apresentadora dá muita risada e deixa o caos tomar conta do pedaço.
No Brasil, homofobia é crime.
Ele perpassa a sociedade brasileira.
Ameaçou chamar a polícia e a gerência do mercado.

Acredite.
"Sai fora e empurra o carro".
As ocupações desordenadas eram constantes. A mata derrubada. O esgoto lançado a céu aberto. Enfim, o de sempre. As ruas eram precárias e havia subidas íngremes.
Abri a porta. Sentei e falei para o "motora":
"Vam'bora, vam'bora. Rápido. Preciso chegar no jornal".
"Vamos embora pra onde, meu deus?"
Entraram no carro e saíram.
Iniciamos a 'perseguição".
Atendi. Alguém no jornal me pediu um retorno.
Limpei as lentes e voltei a tentar localizar o "nosso" Corsa.

"A religião woke"
"Men are pregnant," "women have penises," "all white people are racists," "all black people are victims," "biology is masculinist," "mathematics is racist" ... This is how the book "The Woke Religion" by the French academic and professor of contemporary philosophy at Sorbonne University, Jean-François Braunstein, begins. The book is almost a manifesto, a pamphlet, defending all those who oppose "wokeness."
The author explains that the term "woke" originated in the United States. It came from the Black movement, following the "Black Lives Matter" protests. It originates from the past participle of the verb "wake" (to awaken), "woken." From the Black movement, the term "woke" reached American universities and became a "religion," according to Braunstein. A religion that takes no prisoners. Those who oppose the "woke" trend are "canceled," similar to the Stalinist practice of erasing images of politicians and leaders who fell out of favor after the Bolshevik Revolution. Canceling, he explains, "is the annulment of the very existence of enemies," who are "the personification of evil."
Among these enemies are writer J.K. Rowling, author of "Harry Potter"; comedians Dave Chappelle (in the United States) and Rick Gervais (in England); and even the cartoonist Xavier Gorce in France.
The professor explains that "woke ideology is not a fleeting snobbery," but it is here to stay. The "wokes" primarily act in three areas: race, gender, and against science.
When it comes to race, Braunstein says, we live in a dilemma. "If a person says they are racist, then they are indeed racist; but if they say they are not racist, it doesn’t change anything." The white person is born with a kind of "original sin" and is labeled a "white privileged." Braunstein quotes Martin Luther King, who, in his most famous speech, expressed his dream that his four children would live in a world where they would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by their character. According to the author of "The Woke Religion," the "wokes" think exactly the opposite of Luther King.
"The new racist anti-racists defend that races exist" and that to combat racism, one should not treat "all humans the same." Contemporary anti-racism "aims primarily to widen the scope of accusations of racism." All of Western history has always been racist; all cultural, scientific, artistic, or technical productions are racist, "in addition to being masculinist." To top it off, the "wokes" also accuse mathematics of being "white."
Another focus of "wokeness" is the gender issue. For Braunstein, there is no such thing as transgender people because biologically a person is either male or female, so a transgender person does not exist in the real world, but only in their "imaginary."
"The illusory world must be seen as more truthful than the real one."
Regarding the LGBTQI acronym, the author points out that the letter "T" is truly at the center of debates. Braunstein criticizes transgender athletes who outperform women in sports; criticizes the right of trans women to use female bathrooms; criticizes the American obsession with neutral pronouns and lists the "sacred texts" of the "wokes," focusing their firepower on Judith Butler and Paul B. Preciado. These two authors have their work centered on gender issues.
"Thanks to the invention of transgender, gender theory announces an unheard-of promise that one can change sex or gender at will" (...) "The transgender would be the new hero of our time."
After gender, the next target of the "wokes," according to Braunstein, would be science. In addition to biology and mathematics, "all modern sciences, born in the West, are participants in a bloody history of racism, colonialism, and the destruction of indigenous cultures." Therefore, the "wokes" must "reject science in its entirety."
Braunstein cites several cases of academics who lost their jobs after opposing the "woke religion." For example, lesbian activist and philosophy professor at the University of Sussex, Kathleen Stock, chose to resign after facing the wrath of trans militants who were outraged by her opinion that "the notion of transgender was merely an illusion."
There were also cases of blockages by the "wokes" at venues where conferences would be held with the participation of their opponents. In addition to blockages, there were interruptions of lectures, with the "wokes" "repeating chants" and "slogans." The adversaries are labeled "homophobic," "transphobic," "fatphobic."
For the author, the strength of the "woke" religion comes from the fact that it starts from legitimate claims: the fight against discrimination related to gender, racism, or the revaluation of European colonization. "But it leads to absolutely unacceptable conclusions."
He highlights that "gender theory breaks with reality to enter an imaginary world where gender replaces sex, and bodies no longer matter."
Regarding science, he warns of "the risk of leading to an incredible scientific and technical regression" (...) "our cultural heritage, that of Athens and Jerusalem, that of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, is no longer known and is incorrectly accused of being racist or masculinist."
What to do then? According to the author, it will take a minimum of courage to rise up against aberrant or abject proposals. "Simply say no."
I discovered this book at the Municipal Library of Sesimbra (Portugal) on a hot summer morning in September. While thousands of people were rushing to the beach, I took refuge in the library's air conditioning. When the library receives new releases, they place them on display tables near the shelves. While walking around these tables, I spotted "The Woke Religion," grabbed the book, and read it in one go, to use a new image.
Edited in Portuguese by Guerra e Paz, I discovered that the author is from my generation and a professor at Sorbonne, a university I hold in great affection for having allowed me to work on my PhD under the direction of the esteemed professor Michel Maffesoli.
I understand Braunstein's astonishment in the face of "wokeness." There is a lot of exaggeration and nonsense. But I will focus only on the transgender issue. In 1999, when the publisher Summus (GLS label) published my book "Nicola, a Transgender Novel," the term "transgender" did not yet exist in Brazilian Portuguese. The then-publisher Laura Bacellar had to write an explanatory note about transgender identity.
Indeed, as Professor Braunstein observes, there is no evidence in a transgender person's body that they have a different gender. The other day, I watched a "reel" from transgender YouTuber and singer Leo Áquila, who said exactly that: "It's not in my body; it's in my head." But, contrary to what the professor says, it is not an imaginary world, but a rejection of one's own body. The trans woman is in a male body, but she rejects it. She cannot live with the penis, the absence of prominent breasts, and other visible male traits like facial hair. She needs to be reborn, so she embarks on a journey that includes visits to doctors, taking hormones, getting silicone implants, laser body hair removal, and, most importantly, changing her identity by replacing her male name with a female one. The trans man goes through the same process, reversed, of course (taking hormones to grow a beard, removing breasts, among other actions).
Professor Braunstein sees transgender people as beings who put children and pre-adolescents at risk. The trans woman is someone to fear by allowing her to use the female bathroom, because she could violate "real" women.
It is really hard to understand what it means to be transgender. It's not in the body. The body signals the presence of a penis and, consequently, a scrotum, prostate... But the consciousness within that body does not accept it. I will not speak of the soul, because it is a religious concept without any factual evidence, but it is as if someone inside the person is confronted with the wrong body. It is daily, continuous, chronic suffering. She does not accept herself and lives immersed in the pain of non-acceptance.
There have been many cases of transgender people who committed suicide due to this dilemma: being forced to be someone they are not. Once, interviewing the model Roberta Close ("the most beautiful woman in Brazil is a man" - Notícias Populares), after she had undergone sex reassignment surgery, she told me that when she looked in the mirror, she felt an unbearable discomfort. She had breasts, long hair, curves in her body, was fully depilated, but still had a penis. And the presence of the male member was invasive to her. "I looked in the mirror and couldn't accept it still being there in me." She removed the male organ, got married, and now lives in Switzerland.
What all gender theorists say, in essence, is that the transgender phenomenon occurs when a person's conscious identity does not match their genitalia. In the past, there was nothing to be done. Today, sex reassignment surgeries, therapies, treatments, and even the possibility of changing civil records make the lives of transgender people less anguishing. It is something that should be understood and empathized with.
Unfortunately, Professor Braunstein does not understand how transgender people suffer precisely because they are transgender. It is not about "changing sex and gender at will," but about minimizing suffering, about being compassionate and human in accepting others who are different.

A vegetariana

| A autora Han Kang, sul-coreana, ganhou o Prêmio Nobel de 2024 |
O livro da sul-coreana Han Kang, "A vegetariana" (Editora Todavia), me trouxe lembranças dessa época.
"The Vegetarian"
Nothing seems to make people more uncomfortable than you saying you're a vegetarian. For 10 years, from the age of 20 to 30, I was a vegetarian. At the time, it was like saying you were Bulgarian. Campos Carvalho even wrote a book in the 1960s, "O púcaro búlgaro" (The Bulgarian Jug), where he narrates an expedition to Europe to prove that Bulgarians really existed.
During work trips, the driver and the photographer couldn't wrap their heads around it. We would go to a steakhouse, and while they stuffed themselves with meat, I would just eat salad. They would shake their heads. They couldn't understand it. Every lunch or dinner was always the same script: "Why don't you eat meat?", "Is it because of the little animals?", "Do you feel sorry for the cows and pigs?", "But you also kill lettuce and carrots to eat, don't you?" At home, my mother, trained in Italian cuisine, after receiving a shock equivalent to 10,000 volts, had to create vegetarian menus, very successfully I might add (dishes that I still make to this day). Even so, my relatives found it outrageous, a provocation without limits. I moved to Europe, and a year later, in 1982, while in France, I started eating meat again because, faced with immense survival difficulties, vegetarianism felt like a dispensable item in my backpack. There was also a transcendent, non-food-related reason for returning to Brazil: the memory of home.
The book by South Korean author Han Kang, "The Vegetarian" (published by Todavia), brought back memories of that time. At one point in the book, the vegetarian protagonist's own family surrounds her. They grab her arms. They force her mouth open and shove chunks of meat into it. I was never forced to eat meat, but I went through some awkward moments with people trying—under the guise of aggressive joking—to shove pieces of meat down my throat.
"The Vegetarian" is not about stopping eating meat, nor does it offer recipes based on vegetables and greens. It's about a young woman, Yeonghye, and her process of mental destruction. A victim of abuse by her father, she marries a man who chooses her because she is mediocre, someone who would go unnoticed, a background character in life. After marrying a career-driven man, Yeonghye begins to have nightmares filled with images of blood and mutilated bodies. She decides to stop eating meat to avoid these nightmares. She stops wearing a bra because it constricted her body. Her husband doesn't accept his wife's new ways and calls Yeonghye's family for an "intervention," which ends disastrously.
The next part of the story is narrated by Yeonghye's brother-in-law, who feels an almost uncontrollable attraction to her. He is an artist of little renown and popularity who makes videos. He invites Yeonghye to be in one of his recordings. He paints flowers on her body. She sees the body art as a tool for liberation. To satisfy his desire and penetrate her, the brother-in-law also paints himself. The author describes their relationship as a strange conjunction, a human-vegetal hybrid.
Old Freud, if asked, would say that Yeonghye is the id, a drive, the pleasure principle, and the source of libido. She takes off her clothes naturally. She isn't ashamed to be naked in front of strangers. She displays a shocking lack of inhibition by South Korean moral standards.
The third and final part of the book is told by the older sister, Inhye. The older sister would have—according to Freud—a superego function. She puts an end to her husband's games with Yeonghye. She commits her sister to a psychiatric clinic and kicks out her cheating husband. In her superego role, the older sister suppresses the libertarian instinct. She represses the pleasure principle.
Crushed by a violent father, a Vietnam War veteran; married to a husband who subjugated her and treated her like a servant and sexual slave; Yeonghye gradually loses consciousness, descending levels of lucidity.
It's a book you can read in one day (two if you're feeling lazy). Excellent for this end-of-year period when TV and social media aren't always pleasant company.
